Getting to the Fundamentals of the Game
Now is the time to focus on the fundamentals of this variant. That will be beneficial for the time in the future when you will be playing Shanghai rummy. This variant of the game is played with multiple decks of 54 playing cards which are standard and include the jokers. Two decks are considered enough for a four-player game. Three decks are required for a five to six-player game and so on. The ace cards are considered either the highest cards or the lowest cards. Each game of Shanghai rummy has ten hands, and surprisingly, the rules for each of the hands are unique.
The Dealer and the Dealing
One of the players will become the dealer in first hand. The player immediately to the left of that player will become the dealer in the next hand, and this way, the game will continue. All the subsequent hands will follow this rule. Each of the players will be dealt 11 cards, and that is for each of the ten rounds of the game. Once the cards are dealt, the rest of the deck will be placed in the middle in a face-down manner. One card will be taken from this pile known as the deck and placed next to it in a face-up manner. This is the upcard and also the beginning of the discard pile.
The Upcard and How to Handle that
At the beginning of their turn, every player gets a choice: either to pick a new card from the top of the deck or the upcard from the discard pile. Other players in the game can also take the upcard. After drawing the card from any of the piles, the player will then have to select a card from the ones in their hand to discard. The card they choose will then be placed on the discard pile in the face-up manner, becoming the new upcard. The next player can then take this card, or another one can buy it. If it is not bought, then the card will become dead.
